Facial fillers, or dermal fillers, are the names given to substances that can be injected either into the skin or just under the skin to raise the contour of the skin. The general aim of this is to inject under wrinkles to flatten them out, to inject around the lips to plump them up or to inject into areas of the face to try and lift that area, i.e. to inject around the cheekbone to lift the cheek back upwards giving a more pronounced cheekbone and to lift the jowl or under the eyebrow to give an eyebrow lift.
The aim with facial fillers is to have a subtle improvement in these features so that with each treatment, the patient looks a few years younger, better rested and healthier. If one tries to make a radical change, such as with a face lift, then the treatment can be deemed at many levels to be unsuccessful. The result that we strive for is for friends and relatives to notice how much healthier and rested the patient looks, rather than thinking they have had 'plastic surgery'.
